Basic Awarenss about Barricade

Normally you have seen underconstructions sites where workers use red and white strips or yellow and black strips do you know what is this and for what purpose they are using these strips. In this article we will write about Barricade. Why we need this , how its color selected and  how many types of Barricade and how it help us? We will try to give answers to these questions .
Why we need Barricade ?
We need Barricade because barrication eliminate dangerous situations; Physically prevent people and equipment from falling into excavation, open manholes, floor openings
Limit people or equipment entrance to a safe means of access to excavation.


How we can Make Barricade which is workable and according to standard ?
 There are two types of Barricade
i. Soft Barricade
ii. Hard Barricade

You have watched many movies in which after accident or  damage police covers the area with plastic tape this is Soft barricade
and hard barricade is that one in which hard concrete blocks, pipes or steel used
these color selected by OSHA because of its visibility ( short wavelingth)
Red color used for Danger
Yellow color used for Warning

This tape should be used to warn people of a potential hazard

This tape is used to barricade areas where a high risk hazard exists and where there is a definite risk of injury or harm if precautions are not taken this red and white tape should be used  during the following works
   around the area where a crane lift is being carried out
   underneath leaking elevated process pipes
    around the slewing radius of an Elevating Work platform
    around the perimeter of minor excavations

Soft Barricade  tape is only suitable as a short term (24 hrs) warning devise.

Hard barricade must be capable of supporting 90 kg of force
height must be from 0.95m to 1.15m and support span max 2.4 as shown in picture


A minimum of 1 meter distance must be maintained between barricade and edge of opening. This area 
must be maintained free of equipment and materials
Consideration must be given to keeping materials from falling or protruding outside of the barricaded area
A tag or sign shall be attached or posted to indicate the hazard, the supervisor responsible for the area, and other pertinent warnings

Where to use hard or Rigid Barricade

Rigid Barricades are required along the side of traffic roads 
around excavation deeper than 1.8 meters or existing for longer than 24 hrs

i. Crane lifting
ii. Hot work
iii. Excavation
iv. Work at height
v.  Confined space
vi.Hazardous substance removal

Barricading is required when there is---------- cm (feet) or less between any moving part of a crane and an obstruction.
A. 60 cm or 2 feet
B. 76 cm or 2.5 feet
C. 92 cm or 3 feet
D. 105 cm or 3.5 feet. Please answer me, I couldn't find answer in google

You are encouraged to further your learning by reviewing principal references, specifically, Subpart G of 29 CFR, Part 1926. By the end of this course, we will have reviewed the guidelines required to work safely with signs, signals and barricades.
