What is Near Miss ?

What is Near Miss?

A “Near Miss - is an event which under different circumstances could have caused injury or  damage”. or  we can say this is minor accidents or close call before  damage or loss.
Example:  An object fell off Scaffold , no damage or injury. This object could quite easily hit someone causing severe or fatal  injuries.
second example. An employee trips over electrical cable but avoid a fall by grabbing nearby stand.

When nearmisses happen workers or employ mostly don't report it and because of no reporting and no future prevention this event happen again and again and in last we heare about big accident , injury or property damage .

I  If you have little bit workplace safety knowledge then you already know that Near Miss playes a vital role in accident prevention .According to UK HSE study which reveal that for every “Lost Time” accident (LTI). there were 11 minor injuries and 441 near misses or non injury incidents.  It therefore follows that unless many more incidents than accidents are reported and investigated then there is something dramatically wrong with the incident reporting system.

The three fundamental principles to any safety management system are:
  -  The identification of accident causes.
  -  The control of accident causes.
  -  The minimisation or elimination of all accidents and injuries.

In workplace safety one of the major sources is information, which, if properly investigated will allow for pro-active accident prevention. Therefore every company safety management are encouraging their workers to report every Near Miss and incident.

.
This is the worker responsibility to  report events like the one above to your Supervisor, Safety Officer, Safety Delegate (where applicable) who will complete a Near Miss Report, or you may wish to complete one yourself and hand it to your supervisor.
By reporting Near Misses actually you are helping your company safety environment and helping them  achieving the prevention of all accidents.
