Importance of  Tool BOX Talk (TBT) in workpalce Safety

What is Tool box talk? why safety professionals give too much attention to this ? Who is responsible for this talk in workplace safety ? What is TBT Structure ? In professional workplace environment most of the HSE professionals just name it TBT so you should know what is TBT  

What is TBT ?

TBT is informal meeting between Supervisor , HSE  Professional and workers  before start of each activity in the site. In this meeting the supervisor and HSE staff provides information to workers and workers talk about possible risk, hazards , incident ,company procedures.  OSHA  Act 1992 places this duty on employer to give information and awareness about the workers job.

why safety professionals give too much attention to this ?

First of All professionals care because OSHA  Act 1992 places this duty on employer to give information and awareness about the workers job. Second this is the most effective method to give workers awareness on the spot of activity so they follow the safety rules and perform their activity safely.

 Who is responsible for this talk in workplace safety ?

Supervisor of that activity is responsible for the Tool Box meeting  and HSE Professional

 (Safety officer or Safety Supervisor ) help him in this meeting to discuss all the potentials risk and Hazards. They keep the attendance record with the employees signature as a proof that they attended the meeting.

What is TBT Structure ?

Tool box talk  runs on regular basis means everyday in the morning before activity start  supervisor and Hse professional provide TBT and its duration is normally from 10-15 minutes, if a critical activity is starting again they provide TBT.

What are the consequences if i didn't complete this task?

Under construction sites  are full of risk and hazards and because of these hazard sometimes accident occurs now government agencies and inspectors will check company HSE Performance , they will check TBT paper record to find whether they have fulfill their responsibility or not.

Now i am giving you a practical example.

Activity : we have ten Scaffolders and need to erect a scaffold of 10 meter height .

what we will do ?

first thing first.  Scaffolding supervisor and HSE officer will inform all workers to come for TBT.

now supervisor will start his speach like this.

We are going to erect a scaffolding of 10 meter height , workers A,B,C,D,E ,F will work above and G,H,I,J will work on ground to provide materials (planks, tubes, couplers).

PPE is must for every one make sure every one wear Safety glasses, Shoes, Helmet, Gloves, and Safety vest.

before start of the work barricade the area

above 1.8 meter every one must wear Safety harness and make sure 100% tie up.

use basket and pulley for material handling

now HSE officer help him he will say

if any worker feel sickness headache or fatigue should come down and stop work and relax in rest shelter

Every workers must drink water after every half hour ( summer season)

now workers will ask from supervisors if they have any issue like they don't have safety harness or other workers crossing barricade

then supervisor will solve their problem and activity starts...
